In 1991, Dick Wexelblat began turning, using a wood lathe to make bowls, plates, vases & such, using mostly North American woods from firewood piles & downed trees.
Generally the wood determines the shape & style of the finessed piece. Although he usually knows at the start what kind of vessel he intends to make, Dick lets the wood speak for itself: its grain, natural features, flaws, figuring, shaping the piece to show off the wood's natural features.
